Sundance 2027 in Boulder: A Florals Planning Guide

The move from Park City

For more than forty years January was the reason brands called Park City: the festival turned Main Street into a cluster of temporary lounges and hosted venues. 2026 was its final Park City edition. Park City's winter work now centers on the resorts, corporate groups and private events, not the festival.

Boulder is now Sundance's long-term home. That changes the math for brands: an armature engineered for 2027 can come back re-dressed for the following Januarys instead of being rebuilt, and a studio that learned the city's access rules in year one is worth more in year two. For later editions, we suggest reserving the following January at strike, while the venue plan is still fresh.

The first year is both the opening and the risk. No brand, agency or venue has a Boulder Sundance playbook yet, so the builds that land will be the ones planned around real handover times, winter freight and a downtown that was never laid out for festival load-ins.

The published venues

The festival has said its center will be downtown around the Pearl Street Mall, with spaces on the CU Boulder campus. Its official venues include the Boulder Theater, the Dairy Arts Center (with the Boedecker and Gordon Gamm theaters), Chautauqua Auditorium, Macky Auditorium Concert Hall, eTown Hall, the Canyon Theater at the Boulder Public Library, Old Main on the CU Boulder campus and Cinemark Century Boulder.

Each carries its own constraints. Historic interiors such as Chautauqua Auditorium, the Boulder Theater and Old Main mean freestanding structures and no fixings. CU Boulder venues expect vendor paperwork and certificates of insurance before load-in. The library theater is a public building, so fire-rated materials and quiet install hours apply. At the multiplex, any brand moment lives in the lobby or outside the doors.

Lounges and brand houses

Storefronts, restaurants and hotel rooms within a short walk of the screening venues are where brands will host, and most of them have to be transformed overnight and handed back just as fast. Pearl Street Mall storefronts have narrow historic frontages, no loading docks and early-morning delivery windows, and anything placed on the mall itself needs City of Boulder approval.

Floral does a specific job at a winter festival: it makes a borrowed room feel generous. A planted entrance, a suspended ceiling over the bar or a flower wall behind the conversation stage is often the only warm, living thing in the photograph. For hosted dinners, one hero piece and a strong table language suit the room better than decor spread thin. In a historic hotel lobby that already carries the room, floral belongs at its edges and on the stair.

Matching the piece to the room

The published venues reward different briefs. At the Dairy Arts Center, corridors and load-in times are shared with other programming, so pieces must be compact and fast to place. In a smaller room like eTown Hall, one strong piece behind the speakers does more than decor spread thin across the space. Macky Auditorium adds fire-code review before anything stands in the lobby. At Old Main, restraint and texture suit the building better than volume, with campus event approval secured in advance. For a ballroom or terrace dinner at the St Julien Hotel & Spa, one hero piece and a strong table language carry a hosted brand dinner.

Winter logistics as a planning topic

Treat winter as a line in the schedule, not a mood. Frames, armatures and preserved elements are fabricated in our Kendall workshop and trucked to Colorado with spare days for winter weather on the plains. Fresh product is bought from Denver-area wholesalers close to the date and kept above freezing from their cooler to the venue floor.

The crew flies into Denver International and stays in town for the build. In a first-year festival city, crew lodging is the binding constraint, so rooms are booked the day a job is confirmed and appear on the quote as their own line. Plan your own access windows with the same margin: early-morning deliveries, shared corridors and approvals all take longer in a city doing this for the first time.

What to send us

Send the venue or the block you are targeting, your dates, the handover and hand-back times, the rooms you want dressed and whether anything hangs overhead. Tell us if the venue is historic, on campus or on the mall, because that decides the paperwork before it decides the design.
